TOLEDO, Ohio — Saturday, Toledo Police officers and volunteers shopped the aisles of the Meijer on 1500 East Alexis Road for gifts for children in our community who are in need, this holiday season.

Saturday’s event was different from years past, due to COVID-19. Sgt. Joe Okos of the Toledo Police Department says that more people showed up to volunteer than he expected, which is a good thing.

“Every child deserves a Christmas. And, there’s always that need and we’re lucky that we are able to help with that need and give Christmas to those children.”

Okos adds that he plans to grow the event, once the pandemic ends.

One Meijer employee says that she’s been volunteering for the event ever since it was implemented in Meijer stores.

The gifts will be distributed at a later date.
