TOLEDO, Ohio —Saturday at Bowsher High School in south Toledo, students collected gently-used shoes for a great cause. The 250+ shoes that were provided by community members during today’s drive-thru style event will go to third world countries, but at the same time, support the school’s business program.

Christina Reisinger is an advisor for the program, whose participants put on the event. She says the shoes will first go to a company that’ll pay them per pound. From there, the company will clean the shoes and distribute them to micro-business owners in poorer nations. Finally, the shoes’ recipients will be able to sell them in order to provide for themselves or their families.

“We use the money for travel, materials, for class, for their competition projects, and then it’s also a community service,” said Reisinger.

If you couldn’t make it out to Saturday’s drive-thru drop-off event, you can also donate shoes Monday-Friday during school hours (8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.) The class’ goal is to reach 2,500 pairs of shoes.
