Derek Chauvin | George Floyd

TOLEDO, Ohio / MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — The verdict is in.

A Minneapolis, Minnesota jury has found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of all charges, including second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, something many activists and Black Americans view as a sign of hope for accountability, when police brutality results in death.

Chauvin was seen, in a now viral video, kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, a Black man who was accused of using a counterfeit dollar bill when paying for cigarettes at Minneapolis corner store Cup Foods.

As the verdict was handed down, many offered commentary surrounding their anxiousness regarding the verdict, and the possibility the jury decided against holding Chauvin accountable for his fatal action, resulting in the death of yet another Black man at the hands of law enforcement.

Local officials weighed in on social media, including Toledo Police Chief George Kral, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Senator Rob Portman, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, and more.

Chief Kral said in a statement:

“A gruesome chapter in our country’s history has come to a close, but that does not mean progress should stop. I am happy that justice was served to George Floyd, his family, and his loved ones.

I stand with the family of George Floyd who now have a resolution, though not an end, to their past year of heartache, frustration, and anger. I stand with my officers who continue to protect and serve the residents of Toledo each day. I stand with Toledo because we know our work is not done and look forward to the continued discussions and actions to repair and improve police and community trust.”
