Charity softball event raises money for Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio
The event was put on by a group of students from the University of Toledo!
TOLEDO, Ohio — Who doesn’t like a good game of softball, for an even better cause? Well, that’s what many members of our community spent their Sunday doing today!
“It’s called ‘Softball In September.’ It’s a fundraising, co-ed softball tournament that’s raising money for Ronald McDonald Northwest Ohio Charities,” explained Julia Topolski, treasurer for University of Toledo Avengers Assemble, the organization in charge of the event.
Last year, the event raised over $1,000, with games to continue until 5 p.m. at the Scott Park Sports Complex in Toledo.
“Overall, the organization’s, you know, getting to hospitals, dressing up as The Avengers to visit with children- and yeah, the Ronald McDonald House just does so much for families and so much for kids,” said Brayden Holloway, vice president of University of Toledo Avengers Assemble. “And we felt something good this time of year to have a softball tournament, that way we can get involvement from campus, you know. Who doesn’t like to play a game of softball? As well as get people out, donate to a good cause like Ronald McDonald House.”
The organization’s president says this cause is personal, and a win for all involved.
“We’ve been at the University of Toledo, established for about two years now. Brayden and I founded the organization back at the end of 2020,” said Tyler Schwartz, president of University of Toledo Avengers Assemble. “So we thought that the charity softball tournament would be a fun way to kind of have something unique, but also benefit a cause that we had grown to care a lot about. We started connecting with the Ronald McDonald House because we knew some families from our hometown who had stayed there and had benefited from their work.”
