TOLEDO, Ohio — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is now less than two weeks away, and the city of Toledo has announced its slate of programming in memory of the late civil rights icon. It’s being branded as the “2023 MLK Experience,” and will feature collaboration from across the community, making it a day on — rather than a day off.

In partnership with the University of Toledo, Toledo Museum of Art, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the City of Toledo Human Relations Commission will also host a variety of events beginning Friday. It all kicks off with a weekend of poetry and spoken word hosted by Hunter Prey in Lucille’s Jazz Lounge. There will be signature cocktails, poetry, spoken word, music, food, and even open mic opportunities. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the show begins at 8:00 p.m. The event is open to the public. You must be at least 21. Tickets are $10.00 for non-TolHouse members.

Then on Saturday, a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha will host the 31st annual Scholarship Breakfast, “Daring to Achieve: A Call to Challenge Stigmas and the Status Quo,” featuring guest speaker Brian Dawkins, a former NFL player and Hall of Famer. That event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at The Pinnacle in Maumee. To register, click here.

On Sunday, two community worship services will be held to continue the celebration. One at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church at 10:45 a.m. and another at 11:30 a.m. at Transformation Church. Both services can be attended either in-person or virtually.

And to close out the celebration on MLK Day, the City of Toledo Human Relations Commission and University of Toledo will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Day Celebration, which will be held virtually from 10 a.m. — 12:30 p.m.

For more on this days-long celebration, you can check out the full announcement on the City of Toledo Facebook page.
