The money comes from other communities that couldn’t adequately distribute it.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The U.S. Department of the Treasury has reallocated funding from underperforming cities and counties in the state of Ohio, to Toledo, in the amount of $19 million for more rental assistance.

An official announcement was held this morning at Pathway Incorporated, which specializes in providing financial assistance to those who need it most.

You can watch the full story, here.

“We have a partnership with your landlord potentially. He wants paid, you wanna pay him, we got money to cover the difference where you get back on your feet,” said Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken (D).

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz says this funding is a great example of what a positive relationship between city and county can do.

“We’re gonna work as hard as we possibly can. We will have staff that’ll come in at six in the morning to review these applications. And we’ll do what it takes and I know that we’ll get the job done because we got it done last time. In fact, we did it so well that they have rewarded us with this additional opportunity,” said Kapszukiewicz.

Meanwhile, Gerken understands that this assistance won’t change everything, but can make a difference.

“We know it’s not gonna be able to change your life entirely, but boy if we can get you seven month’s rent, keep your landlord happy, keep your family safe, take that burden off you — today’s the day to do it.”

When asked about the impact of low-wages on the need for rental assistance, Gerken touted the county’s job services, which can help you find a higher-paying job with wages up to $17, $18, even $19 an hour.

If you’d like to apply for this assistance, whether online or in-person, it’s now easier than ever — and must be done in 30 days, or else the money will be lost. Simply visit toledo.oh.gov/renters to get started.
