City of Toledo to repair 40+ miles of residential road in 2021, mayor says
This major undertaking is made possible by Issue 1, which Toledo residents passed in November.
TOLEDO, Ohio — 44 miles: That’s how much residential road the city of Toledo intends to repair in 2021, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced during an early morning news conference Wednesday.
That 44 miles trickles down to 109 total streets this year, a stark contrast to the 7 residential streets that were repaired the year prior.
The mayor says the city has an obligation to ensure the maintenance of road, including residential road, to build trust between residents.
“I know there’s a lot of cynicism that citizens direct toward their government. There’s trust that has eroded over the years; I think much more so in Washington than in any local government in this country. The struggle to communicate to our citizens our sincerity in following through on a pledge is important.”
Kapszukiewicz adds that pressuring residents into passing levies isn’t enough, despite their potential benefits. The mayor adds that when Toledoans see the results of issue 1, they will be more inclined to pass levies in the near future.
“Our sincerity in following through on a pledge is important. It builds the trust needed to govern. We derive our power, in city government, from the consent of the governed, that comes right out of the Declaration of Independence.”
