COVID-19 Update: Ohio’s hospitals near capacity in some areas
Although the state reported a lower amount of daily cases, some indicators are lagging behind.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Saturday afternoon, the Ohio Department of Health reported 8,567 additional COVID-19 cases, 64 more deaths (a new high for Saturday) and 410 hospitalizations, which is alarmingly high. Locally, over 600 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19, but that alone won’t stop the surge.
With almost every county in the state in the red, Governor Mike DeWine suggests Ohioans view COVID-19 data in a different form. On the state’s coronavirus.ohio.gov website, you can view case rates by county, that shows in detail, which counties are reporting the most positive tests per 100K people.
The state is anticipating doses of the Moderna vaccine as early as next week, after some of the first nursing home residents received their dose of the Pfizer vaccine, which the FDA approved earlier in the month. It’ll still be months before the general public has access to either vaccine.
Following the end of the holiday break, schools in Lucas County will be able to bring their students back into the classroom, which everyone agrees needs to happen at some point, but health experts say that COVID-19 spread in the community poses a threat to in-person learning.
