TOLEDO, Ohio — This morning, the city of Toledo held a press conference announcing the deadline to register rental properties for their lead safe program is June 30th. Inspections won’t begin until 2022, but the city wants to ensure every home is accounted for, so the city can increase the lead compliance rate to meet the standard set by other Ohio cities, with the exception of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County.

“When you’re thinking about lead poisoning and you’re thinking about our push for remediating lead in our old housing stock here in Toledo, imagine how small the particle is in a granule of sugar. That’s all it takes, that’s all it takes on a daily basis of exposure to ruin a child’s life,” said Rosalyn Clemens, Director of the Toledo Department of Neighborhoods.

As of right now, the average turnaround time to inspect a home and ensure it’s in compliance is about 3 months. The city says they will need additional inspectors to ensure every home in Toledo is lead safe compliant. To become an inspector for the city, visit toledoleadsafe.com/becomeaninspector.
