TOLEDO, Ohio — Today marked the beginning of early voting in Lucas County, as well as use of the county’s new Early Vote Center.

“This is not the first time we’ve moved the Early Vote Center, but I tell you what, we think it’s gonna be the last,” said Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken (D).

You can watch the story, here.

Early votes for the upcoming August primary can be cast at the Lucas County Shared Services Building on West Sylvania Avenue, the former home of Medical Mutual. Just head to entrance ‘c’, which is where the Early Vote Center resides.

“Essentially, this place was built with the idea of early voting in mind,” said David Karmol, chairman of the Lucas County Board of Elections. “Accessibility for folks who have mobility impairments, we were able to design it for compliance with election laws.”

And to celebrate today’s announcement, a proclamation from Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose was presented. The early voting hours are as follows:

• Wednesday, July 6 — Friday, July 22 | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Monday, July 25 — Friday, July 29 | 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• Saturday, July 30 | 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Sunday, July 31 | 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

• Monday, August 1 | 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

But following today’s announcement, that celebratory mood quickly changed, as area Democrats gathered for a press conference of their own, voicing frustration with the confusion this August primary has caused.

“They [Statehouse Republicans] tried to make this very difficult for people to be able to vote in the state of Ohio, by having two primaries,” stressed Lisa Sobecki (D), a candidate for Lucas County commissioner.

“We can talk about all of those things that have been used to block us — this is nothing new,” explained Paula Hicks-Hudson (D), a candidate for state representative.

“We will vote, no matter what the cost, because it is our right and you will not take our rights from us,” said Toledo City Councilmember At-Large Cerssandra McPherson (D).

This multi-million dollar primary, paid for by you, didn’t have to be. But a lack of cooperation by Ohio’s redistricting commission caused delays beyond the deadline for new state house and senate maps.

When asked if he expects voters to favor Republicans, due to the challenges facing our community and nation, Lucas County Democratic Party Chairman Michael Ashford said he believes voters are pleased with the party. And we’ll soon find out if that’s the case.
