Exclusive: Former councilman Gary Johnson speaks out on bribery & extortion charges
Johnson seems unfazed by his, and 3 of his colleagues’, upcoming trial.
TOLEDO, Ohio — A former Toledo City Council member who’s facing charges of bribery and extortion on the federal level is speaking out exclusively to me.
Gary Johnson attended a resource fair at the Greenbelt Place Apartments Saturday to praise the work of community activists at the apartment complex, but as he did that, I was able to grab a brief interview with the former councilman who’s looking forward to his day in court.
“Well, I’d like to let people know that I know I’m innocent; I can’t wait until I get my day in court. But further than that, at the advice of my counsel, I’m just not allowed to talk about the case,” said Johnson.
But how has this case impacted Johnson personally?
“It certainly put my life in limbo but, you know, it’s a process that we have to get through,” he adds.
As for when a trial could begin in the case of the 4 city council members arrested on those bribery and extortion charges, that has yet to be determined.
