Final day of 2021 Solheim Cup an eventful one for fans, players
Team Europe’s lead grows in the women’s golf tournament.
TOLEDO, Ohio — The final day of the 2021 Solheim Cup was an eventful one, as the fanbase of Team USA and Team Europe cheered loudly at the Inverness Club. Team USA’s support was broad, from those with red, white and blue attire to those with bright red hats, this tournament was undoubtedly a patriotic one.
Even though Team Europe led throughout the day, many of the American fans say they still support their team, as they’ve worked hard to get where they are.
The majority of the fans in attendance of the tournament say they’re just glad to finally be out and about enjoying live-sports after a year of what felt like gloom and doom.
“This is such a fun event. I have been coming to the Solheim Cup for years, and actually, I help support and lead the cheers in the stands. And that’s why my voice sounds like it does. The passion for golf, combined with the passion for country, is absolutely amazing when you’re in the stands,” said Debbie O’Connell, an avid golfer and fan.
O’Connell says she came all the way from New Jersey for the Solheim Cup, along with a group of about 60 people, all ranging from Florida, Oregon, California, Arizona to even Texas. She says you can expect to see her back in the glass city soon.
“Toledo’s been amazing! I’m so excited for the city and I ate at some amazing restaurants. And I have to come back, because my picture was actually on the side of a building from a past Solheim Cup, cheering. So I was like, ‘Aww, the city did that! I’ve gotta come back.’,” O’Connell added.
One man I spoke to says he and his daughter came north to Toledo from Cincinnati.
“You only get these in the U.S. every four years, and to get it within 2 ½ hours of our hometown is even less frequent. So, we have to take advantage of it, even if it’s just for one day,” said James Love.
As for how significant of an economic impact this tournament will have Toledo, it will be a while before those numbers are available.
