TOLEDO, Ohio — In the city of Toledo, a wealth and opportunity gap is evident, which is why community leaders gathered at Amazing Grace Christian Center on Airport Highway in south Toledo Saturday, to discuss it.
“We just wanna keep the ideas that we’re sharing today, keep them in everybody’s mind. And keep repeating these ideas, so it’s not a one-day thing,” said George White, executive board member of SEIU Local 1.
While that’s one of the reasons that make these conversations so important, there are upcoming conversations in which they could get put to good use.
“One way, actually, in which we can act on these thoughts and ideas is with the janitorial contract that’s going to be expiring in July,” explained Yanela Sims, the Ohio State Director for SEIU Local 1.
The stark differences in our city’s neighborhoods, wages, and impediments facing Black employees were among the topics discussed.
The organization is set to host a similar event on Juneteenth at the UAW Local 12 union hall, from noon to 4 p.m. If you have any questions, call the organizer at 419-243-0447.
