TOLEDO, Ohio — Last week, the city of Toledo surpassed its homicide record set in 2020, so what’s next? The man leading the charge to reduce gun violence, JoJuan Armour, commissioner of the Mayor’s Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence, views his efforts as successful, but acknowledges there’s still work to be done.
“We are still in those infancy stages of developing our process to address the overall picture of gun violence. We have a number of things that we can hang our hats on and a number of things that I’m extremely proud of, but at the end of the day, the goal is to reduce homicides. I think once we identify some consistency and sustainability in some of our programs, it’ll be able to have more of a long-lasting effect,” said Armour.
Armour says that there isn’t just one solution to address gun violence and if that was the case, the city wouldn’t be dealing with a homicide every other week. He adds that it’ll take time before we feel the effects of the city’s multi-faceted approach to gun violence.
