Gov. DeWine signs exec. order allowing student athletes to profit off name, image, likeness
The executive order will allow athletes to engage in sponsorships as well as endorsement deals.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has signed an executive order allowing college student athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness. Other states have already passed similar name, image, likeness bills, including Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and New Mexico.
“The Name, Image, and Likeness Order prohibits those colleges and universities from preventing a student from participating in athletics or otherwise in any way punishing them as a result of earning such compensation,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “Under this order, student athletes will be able to get professional representation and also be able to enter contracts for endorsements.”
This executive order is being signed due to a breakdown in talks about a similar bill in the Ohio Statehouse, in which Senate Republicans added a transgender sports ban amendment to the proposal. Democrats say Republicans are looking for a solution to a non-existent problem.
