How you can be a part of deciding Toledo’s next police chief
The search is officially underway.
TOLEDO, Ohio — With the start of the new year comes many changes, including the leadership of Toledo’s police department. It was announced back in early August by Toledo Police Chief George Kral that he would be leaving the department, effective January 9th of 2023. And now, the search begins for a new chief.
With Kral’s replacement to have such an impact on this medium sized city, officials want to hear from you.
The City of Toledo is inviting residents to complete a survey regarding the future of the Toledo Police Department, including the hiring of a new chief. The survey is open and responses will be accepted through Monday, December 19th.
This survey was developed by Ralph Andersen and Associates, the firm assisting the city with this search. Data from the community survey will be used in developing an outline for the ideal candidate.
The decision will be a consequential one regardless, following the community response to the death of George Floyd in 2020. Many who attended that protest in May of that year in downtown Toledo demanded the department be more transparent, and involve community members in holding the department accountable. Those pleas led to the creation of a civilian review board, which continues to do this day.
