Local Coca-Cola union workers remain on strike
Union workers at the Toledo Coca-Cola Bottling Plant remain on strike after their contract with the company expired.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Teamsters Local 20, the union that represents the workers, says that members voted against the ratification of a new contract on November 1st as their current contract expired, which led to the start of the strike.
Workers say they aren’t encouraged to speak with the media when a representative isn’t present, although the message on their signs is clear: Union members want higher pay, better out-of-pocket healthcare prices and more protection against COVID-19.
Coca-Cola Consolidated released the following statement:
“We are disappointed with the Union’s decision to take our teammates out on a strike. We do not believe this action is in the best interest of our teammates. We greatly value the contributions of our Toledo teammates and had put forth a very fair and equitable offer during our contract discussions. We have a plan in place to prevent interruptions to our business operations so we can continue to serve our customers and consumers in the best way possible.”
Union leadership hopes to resume negotiations with the company this week and put an end to the strike.
