Local family in need of help after van is destroyed by fire
The family’s lucky to be alive, as heat from the fire melted part of the exterior of their home.
TOLEDO, Ohio — A Point Place family’s hands are full after someone allegedly lit their van on fire, destroying it. Amber Wesolowski says because of that, her family is left to cover $5,000 for a new van, and a grocery bill that’s double what it normally is, due to the fact they have to pay for delivery.
“You pay more and you pay delivery and, you know, you have to tip those people- they’re trying to make a living too. So it’s just like we can’t catch up, because it’s just a string of bad luck,” Wesolowski says.
She tells me on Christmas night, her family went to bed in the living room while watching a movie. Then, around 2:40 in the morning, her neighbor started banging on the door. What her neighbor told her made her heart drop.
“Our insurance policy was canceled just a day before the situation happened. And they sent us a letter, and in the letter, it said we could renew our policy, but when we called them since what had happened, they immediately dropped us as clients and told us there was nothing they could do to help us,” said Wesolowski.
Wesolowski says she did have gap insurance, which will cover a portion of the costs associated with the van. She adds that her family, in their heart of hearts, believe they know who did this, but it’s not enough evidence for police.
“We had an altercation with someone, literally, a few hours prior to this. We’re not really the kind of people to have enemies and things like that. This person was a family member,” she claims.
She adds, at first, she didn’t think that was the case, but in hindsight, alleges it’s the only reasonable explanation, considering no other car in the neighborhood was targeted. Wesolowski says that a neighbor’s surveillance video supposedly captured the car circling the neighborhood in the early morning hours.
But aside from the van itself, the family still has a lot on its plate. Having just got married, Wesolowski’s just glad it’s the down-season at a local country club she works at, or she wouldn’t know how to get to work. Her husband is receiving rides to his job.
