Looking ahead to the 2021 Oscars, the 2nd in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic

Don’t expect any virtual aspect to this Sunday’s show.

LOS ANGELES — Sunday, the spotlight is on Hollywood, as the 2021 Oscars award show takes place for a second time in the midst of a pandemic. Notably, this year’s show will be one ton watch, with diversity taking center stage, both in the nominees and the films nominated.

This year’s Academy Awards will take place both at Union Station in Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center, venues officials say will allow for the celebration to be held in accordance with CDC guidelines. There will be no virtual speeches this year.

Nominated for actor in a leading role, Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal — Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — Anthony Hopkings, The Father — Gary Oldman, Mank and Steven Yeun, Minari.

Nominated for actress in a leading role, Viola Davis, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday — Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman — Frances McDormand, Nomadland and Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman.

And nominated for best picture, The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago Seven.
