TOLEDO, Ohio — Vital Health in Maumee handles severe cases of behavior issues exhibited by kids. Oftentimes, these kids have either been kicked out of school or their parents are just at a loss when it comes to helping their child.

The demand for treatment, according to CEO and Co-Founder Jacob Spellis, has shot up, which is why they now offer same-day psych appointments to deal with crises and provide medication, if needed. He says the root of these issues can stem from what you could call generational curses that are passed along — and the impact on a child can be felt throughout life — during the teenage years, in particular.

“When you’re a kid, you’re like ‘I can move out on my own easily’ — same thing with mental health. ‘Well, if I just vape, smoke cigarettes, do weed it’ll get better. I’ll quit when I’m 18 or 21.’ You know? That never happens,” said Jacob Spellis, CEO & co-founder of Vital Health.

Spellis added that in treating kids, it’s important to keep in mind they are kids and can internalize the amount of attention they receive. He says looking at things from every angle are key to effective treatment.

“We have primary care, psych services, counseling, case management, so we kind of have a tail. We just don’t put the band-aid on and leave you — we jump in there and give you antibiotics, fix the scab, and watch the scars heal.”
