Michigan experiencing sharp increase in COVID cases as vaccine rollout continues
Health officials say now is not the time for Americans to let up their guard.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Since the release of the COVID vaccine, many states have been experiencing a sharp decrease in COVID-19 cases, but Michigan is one of the few seeing an alarming increase in cases, something health experts says is the result of spread of the multiple, contagious virus variants, including the U.K., Brazil and California variants.
Governors, including Ohio’s Mike DeWine, remain concerned that the state’s close proximity to Michigan could result in further variant spread here in the buckeye state.
“I feel very good about where we are. The challenge is that we’re seeing states like Michigan have a real upswing in cases, the variant is really multiplying in Michigan, it’s also doing that here in Ohio,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
Experts say the best way to prevent spread of the variants is to continue to follow COVID-19 guidance set forth by the CDC, including physical distancing, mask wearing and hand washing.
