TOLEDO, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 is seeking public comment on two proposed projects in three Northwest Ohio counties.

Van Wert County

(PID: 113907) The city of Van Wert, in partnership with ODOT, is proposing a project to reconstruct the pavement of Leeson Avenue on the southwest side of the city of Van Wert. Reconstruction of the pavement will occur from the Shannon Street (State Route 118) intersection westward to Rose Drive. Pavement reconstruction in this area will be accompanied by installment of curb and gutter along the roadway for improved drainage and replacement of water mains and sanitary sewers.

As part of this project, a multi-use trail will also be constructed along the north side of Leeson Avenue from the Shannon Street (State Route 118) intersection westward to Smiley Park. A portion of the trail will be constructed within the southeastern corner of Smiley Park to connect to existing walkways in the park. Smiley Park is designated as a public recreational property, as it’s owned and maintained by the city of Van Wert. As a designated public recreational property, it is afforded protection under federal law. The use of federal funds requires measures to be developed to minimize harm and advance public notice be given of impacts to this recreational property.

During pavement reconstruction along Leeson Avenue, it is anticipated that traffic will be temporarily detoured, although access to nearby properties will be maintained.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2024.

District Wide

(PID: 102773) ODOT is proposing repairs to the concrete pavement along U.S. 24 from the Indiana state line, through Paulding County, to the Baltimore Street interchange in Defiance County on the north side of the city of Defiance.

Additionally, concrete repair work is planned at several exit and entrance ramps along U.S. 24, including the State Route 49 and U.S. 127 interchanges in Paulding County, as well as the Baltimore Street, State Route 15, and State Route 66 interchanges in Defiance County. Construction activities may result in temporary ramp closures. If temporary ramp closures are required, vehicular traffic at the ramps will be detoured temporarily.

Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2022.
