“Part of our requirement by municipal code is to have a public hearing. That’s what happened this evening. Hearing both people in opposition and for the medical dispensary. So this is the next step in that long process,” said Mark Frye, president of Sylvania City Council.

Michael Howard, a property owner in the city of Sylvania, would like to develop 5625 W. Alexis Road into a medical marijuana dispensary. This dispensary wouldn’t be the same as a recreational marijuana facility, as you would need a doctor’s prescription.

Howard says that there are plenty of misconceptions regarding marijuana, but says the science supports the fact that the plant can be used to treat a myriad of ailments.

“Medical marijuana is not a drug, it’s a medicine. That’s essentially what it is. There are a lot of archaic views that, you know, people think that it’s a gateway drug or this and that. And most of which have all been debunked, at this point,” Howard said.

Council decided to hold off on making any decision on the special use permit, saying a lot of information was shared that needs to be considered.
