Rep. Sobecki calls on Gov. DeWine to veto bill that would limit health director’s power
Democrats say “SB 311 will undermine state’s response to COVID-19, leading to more deaths and further destabilizing economy.”
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Rep. Lisa Sobecki (D-Toledo) Monday sent a letter calling on Governor Mike DeWine (R) to veto Senate Bill (SB) 311, legislation Democrats say will slow the state’s coronavirus response, ultimately leading to more deaths and further destabilizing Ohio’s economy.
Statehouse Republicans fast tracked SB 311 last week, voting along party lines to pass the controversial bill that would strip executive power from the state’s health director during public health crises.
“For months while COVID-19 rampaged through our state, destroying businesses and lives, Republicans in the Statehouse have done little to help; instead they’ve supported fringe sciences and undermined the state’s response to the pandemic,” said Rep. Sobecki. “SB 311 will not solve this crisis. It hurts our medical professionals and will ultimately hurt our state. That’s why I’m asking Governor DeWine to veto this dangerous bill.”
