Rising COVID-19 cases cause for concern as vaccine rollout continues
Health experts say combatting this rise will involve restraint and patience.
TOLEDO, Ohio — As Lucas County and its northern neighbor, Monroe County, experience a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, local health officials are expressing the importance of continuing to follow guidance to prevent spread of the virus, including mask wearing, physical distancing, and of course, receiving the vaccine.
But despite the rapid increase in vaccinations, cases are still rising, but not within the same age group as previous spikes. These new cases are being reported in young people, especially those 16 and under, as those under 16 have yet to get vaccinated, due to continued research with regard to the effects of the vaccine on young adults and kids.
One of the major concerns is that if the virus continues to spread amongst younger individuals, the variants will continue to spread, and eventually multiply.
Dr. Brian Kaminski of ProMedica says that herd immunity can only be achieved through vaccination, which is why he’s concerned with regard to misinformation surrounding the all-important shot, as well as fears regarding side effects of the vaccine.
Kaminski says any production errors, specifically one involving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, have been resolved and are self-evident that the system works.
