Sitting down with Ohio Supreme Court candidate Judge Terri Jamison (D)
Jamison’s story takes her from West Virginia to Ohio, all in pursuit of the future.
TOLEDO, Ohio — “I come from a different perspective. I come from the average person’s background.”
One of the many things Ohio voters can expect on their May 3rd primary ballot is the candidates for Ohio Supreme Court. And this morning, I’m chatting with one of them. Judge Terri Jamison, a Democrat, is looking to serve as an associate justice on the state’s highest court.
Currently, she sits on the bench of the state’s 10th District Court of Appeals, and believes that her blue collar background is why Ohioans should give her their vote.
“I believe I bring common sense. I bring the ability to research and write. I believe that I’m very creative, innovative,” said Judge Jamison.
Originally from Welch, West Virginia, Jamison came to Ohio in 1983 due to economic decline. She worked as an insurance agent, then pivoted to become a trial attorney in Franklin County, after graduating from Capital University Law School in 2004.
“I volunteer as a blood ambassador for the Red Cross, I volunteer with Women to Women, I volunteer with the National Council of Negro Women, and also with my local church.”
And with the fate of so many controversial cases resting with the state supreme court, Jamison believes Ohioans should trust her interpretation of the law on various issues, from racial justice to reproductive rights.
“There are many things that are constitutional questions and there’s many things that are just your basic, everyday issues that a person is going to face that are going to come before the Supreme Court. They are the court of last resort within the state, and at this current time, they only take about 6% of the cases that are filed in the Supreme Court,” she explained.
