Still no arrest in triple shooting outside Whitmer Stadium

TOLEDO, Ohio — It has been over a week since a triple shooting took place outside Whitmer Stadium, where the school’s football team was facing off against Central Catholic. And still, there have been no arrests, even with a new image showing the vehicle police say was involved.
The Toledo Police Department released this surveillance photo showing a blue Dodge Charger. The shooting injured two adults and one Whitmer student. Of course, there were scary moments, as well as some panic among parents who needed to locate kids in and around the stadium.
But since the shooting, what started as pain has turned to anger. A joint statement released by Washington Local Schools Superintendent Kadee Anstadt, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and Toledo Police Chief George Kral on the day that followed the shooting had a simple message:
“Everyone should be able to enjoy a Friday night football game without having to fear for their safety.”
But, unfortunately for those in attendance of that game, this was not the case. Cell phone video shot by fan Lionel Maddox shows a well-organized and calm evacuation, which aligns with the officials’ joint statement. A total of 16 law enforcement officers were present, with guests being screened through a metal detector before entering the game. That’s why it’s important to reiterate that the shooting took place outside the stadium.
And in light of this incident, the school district has continued to offer support to its students, which have likely had their lives changed as a result. From providing counselors that weekend to standing united in orange during Whitmer’s most recent game last Friday, this will be a process indeed.
