Sylvania residents protest proposed shooting range
Some residents say they aren’t against the concept of a shooting range, but they can’t get behind the proposed location.
SYLVANIA, Ohio — Sylvania residents who are upset with Midwest Shooting, a company that would like to open another shooting range in the city of Sylvania at the site of the former Andersons store, protested the company’s proposed plan, Sunday afternoon.
Midwest Shooting currently operates a shooting range in Lima, Ohio, but would like to expand to Sylvania. Residents say that they aren’t against the idea of a shooting range, but they are against its proposed location, near a school and senior living facility.
A couple of the concerns this group of protestors have are that stray bullets could potentially injure someone, or a person with ill-intent would plot to carry-out a mass shooting at nearby Northview and Southview High Schools.
During a public hearing held by the city two weeks ago, Midwest shooting stated that experienced professionals will operate this additional location, if the city approves, and that walls made from steel, rubber and concrete would protect the community from any potential fatal stray bullet accident.
A vote on Midwest Shooting’s Special Use Permit is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 4.
