Tips for preventing the spread of COVID-19 during Thanksgiving

TOLEDO, Ohio — As you’re likely preparing for your Thanksgiving celebration, there are a few things you want to keep in mind, including the fact we’re still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cases are on the rise here in Northwest Ohio and in many parts of the country, which is why health officials are stressing vaccination and outdoor gatherings for the holiday. They say your immunocompromised family members should be vaccinated, especially if they plan on attending your Thanksgiving gathering.

The vaccine may not prevent you from getting COVID-19, however, it will prevent you from landing in a hospital bed, something doctors and nurses everywhere know all too well, having worked through the pandemic.

“It’s really hard to explain how sad it was in the ICU last year seeing loved ones really pass away from holiday gatherings, so you want to minimize the odds of that at all. But having a mostly vaccinated household is really the main way to make those risks almost negligible,” said Dr. Joseph Khabbaza of the Cleveland Clinic.

Khabbaza adds that it’s important to consider who you’re inviting over and how everyone will be set up at the dinner table, whether in or outdoors.
