Toledo-Lucas County Health Dept. addresses confusion on vaccine distribution
Health commissioner says local health departments only have so much power and limited vaccine supply.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Tuesday morning, Toledo-Lucas County Health Commissioner Dr. Eric Zgodzinski held a press conference to address confusion surrounding distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Zgodzinski says because the state is early in the vaccine distribution process, supply is limited to vaccinate people in all 88 counties. He adds that non-essential workers can expect to have the option to get the vaccine in mid 2021, ideally the month of June.
Governor Mike DeWine announced before the holidays his and public health officials’ goal to get students back into classrooms on March 1st, by prioritizing teachers in the vaccination process.
Throughout this pandemic, health officials have made it clear that individuals 65 and older are at the highest risk, due to comorbidities, a weaker immune system, and of course — age.
To make it easier for those who need the vaccine, the health department introduced a form that can be filled out to pre-register to get the vaccine in phase 1B, which includes people age 65 and older, people living with severe congenital, developmental, or early-on-set medical condition and adults who work in schools, specifically grades K-12.
