Toledo Police shoot, kill suspect in west Toledo neighborhood
TOLEDO, Ohio — The intersection of Secor and Avondale — normally quiet — was closed for a significant part of the day Sunday, as police investigated an incident.
According to the press release from Toledo Police, members of the department’s SWAT team were pursuing the suspect in a homicide that occurred earlier in the day, which ended at the intersection. 33-year-old Albert Alderman allegedly called 911 around six this morning, reporting his live-in girlfriend, 29-year-old Kelsie Barnier, was unresponsive and not breathing. Detectives and the coroner’s office then responded to the Byrne Road residence, which resulted in the opening of a death investigation. Alderman agreed to give a statement and the body didn’t show any signs of trauma. But upon completing the autopsy, the coroner’s office determined her cause of death was strangulation, making this a homicide case.
Once notified of the cause of death, detectives called Alderman who had agreed earlier to meet with them — but he had changed his mind. Then, shortly before three, SWAT officers saw him leaving his residence in a vehicle and attempted to stop him. He stopped for a short time on Dorr — just west of Byrne — but continued westbound. Police say once on Avondale, he waved his handgun out an open window in the direction of officers, which resulted in the passenger officer in the primary unit firing a round. Alderman then continued southbound onto Secor, stopped, exited his vehicle, and began firing at officers. Four officers fired back, he fell, got back up to fire more, officers fired back, and he fell again, allowing police to approach and get the gun away from him.
After this whole ordeal, the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department responded, pronouncing Alderman dead on scene. Aside from his death, two officers who experienced hearing loss will be seeking medical attention. As is the case with all officer-involved shootings, due to the department’s collective bargaining agreements, the officers who fired their department-issued weapons will be placed on administrative leave. Audio and video from the incident will be released during a news conference at a later date.
