Trump proposes elimination of taxes on tips, Harris follows suit
TOLEDO, Ohio — Eliminating taxes on tips has become a popular policy position, this election.
Back in June, during a rally in Las Vegas, former President Trump proposed the elimination of taxes on tips. Now, in July, Vice President Kamala Harris announced — also at a rally in Las Vegas — that one of her proposals was to eliminate taxes on tips.
First thing’s first: It’s no coincidence both made their announcements on this policy in Las Vegas. The city is the center of entertainment and service industry workers, in addition to the fact Nevada is a toss-up state, according to 270toWin.
Second thing’s second: While the idea of eliminating taxes on tips sounds great to those who work in the service industry, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget says this could result in a revenue shortfall of $150 to $250 billion over the next decade.
So while both candidates have expressed support for the plan, it appears neither wants to address the potential downsides.
