Two Ohio lawmakers want primary election moved to June 28
They say now is the time for more time.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Two Ohio lawmakers want the state’s primary election moved to June 28th.
In a motion filed Monday, State Senator Vernon Sykes and Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo said this move would give the Ohio Redistricting Commission, the group tasked with redrawing new House and Senate maps, more time to finalize them. While the date specified in the motion is June 28th, they say any way the commission can receive additional time would be beneficial.
Last week, in a 4–3 vote, the Ohio Supreme Court rejected the latest maps over concerns they overly favored the Republican party. And that wasn’t the first time the state’s highest-court rejected the panel’s maps for that very reason.
The new plan is for members of the seven-person panel to seek the recommendations of two independent mapmakers, who will work alongside the 4 mapmakers currently on the panel. A mediator will also be brought in to help resolve any disagreement among the mapmakers, according to the AP.
This comes as Wednesday at noon, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will deliver the annual ‘State of the State’ address at the Ohio Statehouse. A live stream will be available at ohiochannel.org.
