University of Toledo breaks ground on National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza
The ceremony took place Friday afternoon at the Thompson Student Union.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Today, the University of Toledo held an indoor groundbreaking for their new National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza, which celebrates historically Black, on-campus Greek fraternities.
The plaza will feature a semicircle of 9 benches and monuments, recognizing each of the nine organizations that comprise NPHC. There also will be a reservable amphitheater for outdoor events.
Those with the university say they hope this soon-to-be completed space makes incoming and current Black students feel welcome to be who they are.
“When a student comes to college, they want to have a sense of belonging. If a student is involved in sorority or fraternity, having a plot on campus gives them a place to call home,” said Valerie Walston, Associate Vice President of Student Services at the University of Toledo.
“We want our students to tell us what they want to see. So we heard those requests and I think we were able to come together with them to figure out something that worked for what they wanted, that worked for the physical space on campus,” said Tyrel Linkhorn of the University of Toledo.
I’m told the university doesn’t have a set date as to when the communal space will be completed, although it will be done sometime during the upcoming fall semester
