Ohio recreational marijuana law goes into effect Thursday
What better place to discuss recreational marijuana becoming legal Thursday in Ohio than Michigan? Besides, it’s been legal there since 2018. Here’s what you can expect in the months to follow the new law, including possible changes.
LANSING, Michigan — On Thursday, recreational marijuana will become legal in Ohio. Back in 2018, Michigan voters legalized it and on November 7th of this year, is when Ohio voters did the same. However, there are some elected officials back in Ohio that would like that law to be changed.
Back on October 13th, Ohio Senate President Matt Huffman said of Issue 2 before its passage, reported by the Statehouse News Bureau: “I will advocate for reviewing it and repealing things or changing things that are in it.”
And with recreational marijuana set to be legal in Ohio, following suit of other states — like Michigan — where recreational weed has been legal, it’s important to note that no law is completely safe from being updated or even done away with entirely.
In the meantime, looking at what follows this law going into effect, who’s tasked with regulating? That would be the Division of Cannabis Control, formed in the law under the Ohio Department of Commerce, which has been given nine months removed from Issue 2’s passage to set the ground rules for dispensaries.
And to avoid any confusion, medical marijuana is what’s been legal in Ohio since 2016.
