Your Money: U.S. adds 800,000+ jobs, unemployment rate grows slightly
The report comes as supplemental unemployment benefits end in some states.
TOLEDO, Ohio — With employers desperate for workers, the U.S. has added 850,000 jobs in June. The largest growth was in the leisure and hospitality sectors, with 343,000 positions filled, half of that number in bars and restaurants. The unemployment rate grew slightly, from 5.8% to 5.9%.
Many businesses have blamed the struggle to fill positions on supplemental unemployment benefits, but other factors such as childcare and lingering concerns over COVID-19 have played a larger role in the growing unemployment rate.
To accommodate the worker shortage, employers have raised wages and offered sign-on bonuses. After scrolling through LinkedIn, I found some employers offering sign on bonuses, ranging from $100 to $1,000. Locally, Amazon is offering a $1,000 sign-on bonus for a full-time warehouse team member.
